Ask Him Why by Catherine Ryan Hyde

Ask Him Why by Catherine Ryan Hyde

A different kind of tale about  a serviceman’s  return from fighting in the war in Iraq.
Joseph is in  the army and he has 2 siblings, Ruth and young Aubrey. Joseph is suddenly discharged dishonorably  and no one knows why. The family has always been very uncommunicative towards each other and young Aubrey, who worships his older brother cannot stand not knowing what has happened.
The truth quickly comes out that Joseph is a traitor who deserted his unit and also persuaded his fellow soldiers to do the same so he is  court-martialed and taken into custody. The parents know the reason but are desperate to hide their family from the incessant publicity. Aubrey gets ever more upset and then angry with his brother.
Does the family ever get back together? Does Joseph get a prison term? Does Aubrey ever get to know the answer and will the family ever be made whole again?

An interesting book to read about family relationships with aspects of wartime service  which many young people have had to face.
