Belgravia by Julian Fellowes
Anyone who was a follower of the series, Downton Abbey might recognize the author of this book.He is the famous author and producer of that much-loved series.
This is a great book about a slightly earlier period of British history as it follows the story of 2 families, one, a noble high society family, Lord and Lady Brockenhurst, and also a lesser family of up and coming tradesmen, the Trenchards.
The book starts in Brussels in in 1815 as the British Army is preparing to fight the battle of Waterloo. The families meet at the Dutchess of Richmond's grand party and what happens then between the two families is the basis of the story.
Most of the story takes place in England and has many additional characters, all well defined and believable and interesting.
This is an engaging book, very easy to read. It has lots of twists and turns and throughout you will begin to understand the social mores of the day and the place that class and society played in those times. However, the story is more about the main characters in the book and how they respond to life rather than pure history.
I can easily see this book being made into a film or a brand new television series.
If you liked Downton Abbey you will probably love this book.
