A Boy Made of Blocks by Keth Stuart
A young couple with an autistic son are having marital problems and Alex , the husband has left their house to live with his best friend to see if he can work things out with a separation for a while from the family.
His wife Jody and son Sam continue living in the family home. Jody feels that Alex isn't helping with Sam enough and Alex has problems from his past life which also give him other problems. Alex loses his job and so tries to use his extra time to start helping with Sam to help heal the sitution at home.
Sam has many of the typical autistic behaviours; he is scared of new things, loses his temper easily, has talking difficulties and doesn't relate well to new things whether it be people or places or situtions. He seems to be smart and loves to play Minecraft, a special video game, where the idea is to build your own country and place. That is the place where Sam feel safe and understand. Alex realizes that he can reach out to Sam by joining in the game and it is the opening to a new beginning for this complex family.
This was an extremely interesting book about autism, told in a well thought- out novel based on the authors own experience with his own son.
For anyone with children you will find this a most intriguing and captivating book to read. It will help you understand the problems associated with life and special children but also a great book to read as a novel
