A Visit to Queen Wilhelmina State Park in Mena, Arkansas

A Visit to Queen Wilhelmina State Park in Mena, Arkansas

We needed a break away from our regular activities so Mike took a chance,  considering the awful rainy weather we have been having, and booked us into the newly remodeled Queen Wilhelmina Lodge in the State Park.

We were very lucky. The weather could not have been better. Beautiful bright sunshine and fleecy white clouds and not a drop of rain , although one storm was seen going through the valley. It made for lovely photos and we even saw a rainbow. The temperature was just right for walking, and  seeing all the lovely views in the park.

The lodge was very nice; clean, spacious, quiet and overlooked from the edge of the  mountain over a verdant valley which stretched miles and  miles into the distance.

There are some small activities around the park; a small gauge  railway for the children's amusement  but it is mostly a park for hikers and campers and for viewing the beautiful scenery.
There are many overlooks with easy parking.

Mike really enjoyed driving around the park and this whole area on the  small twisty roads, going up hills and down valleys and I enjoyed the beautiful scenery.

To reach the lodge we took the back roads through mostly south-west Oklahoma and were surprised at  the lovely rolling countryside.  The roads were virtually empty of traffic and even people and we passed through few small towns -  indeed, they were very small- and it  led to a very relaxing trip.
