Enchanted Islands by Allison Amends
This is the tale of two Jewish girls born at the end of the nineteenth century. Both live in the USA. The girls become good friends and the novel tells of their life story through the early years encompassing the World Wars 1 and 2.
The story tells of both their early lives and of their later adventures as they reach their early twenties. Then their lives go in different directions but much later, eventually they meet up again.
A good deal of the story is centered on the life of Frances, who becomes a spy stationed on one of the Galapagos islands with her "fake" spy husband. They have instructions to find out what the Germans are doing on the "Enchanted Islands", as they are known. The island is almost deserted of people and life is bleak, food is scarce and life is hard.
I always like reading books about other people's lives and this one seems very believable and one you will remember for quite a while.
