The year of the Runaways by Sunjeer Sahota

The year of the Runaways by Sunjeev Sahota

Such a sad book to read.So why read it?
Well, it tells the story of a group of young Indian Sikh men who go as immigrants to make their fortune in the UK.
Most of them do not know each other but gradually as the book progressive they are thrown together mostly in their quest for work and to make a living in a country that seemed so bright and inviting when seen from their homes in India.
They arrive in many different ways through all forms of legal and illegal maneuvers. They are full of hope that they will be able to make good and soon send money back to their families in India. Reality soon sets in and the book follows them through their trials and tribulations for their first year,
An interesting book to read especially with all the talk of immigrants in the news these days. The many Indian words and expressions used in the book made it difficult to read but also gave it also an authenticity  that shows the Indian author knew exactly the situation his characters faced.
